SW1 Precinct Wayfinding Signage

The SW1 Precinct included eight buildings located on a city block in South Brisbane. One of the methods to unify them was four large, 3m tall, red pillars set at the street corners of the block encompassing the buildings. These greeted visitors crossing busy streets at assigned pedestrian crossings. The red was part of the marketing campaign and only used at the precinct perimeter.
To unify the precinct, many references were made to existing designs used by the various building and landscape architects. The material choice (reclaimed timber and black metal) was keyed off the buildings at each end of the precinct. The pattern was sourced from one used by the landscape architects on shade structures.
Orientation maps (also part of the design project) were housed in a lockable cabinet to allow updates when tenancies changed. These were located at each end of the central laneway (Alto Walk) to supplement the directional signs.
The signage strategy extended the initial signage completed by Minale Bryce Design Strategy for phase one of the precinct.
A set of directional signs were placed at each end of the central laneway (Alto Walk) as a set of 'bookends' to the signage system.
The material's specified were chosen to reflect the reclaimed timbers and black metal used in the signature buildings at each end of the precinct. Architecture by Cox Rayner.
